When considering how far south Vikings ventured into the New World, due consideration must be given to the circumstances surrounding previous Viking voyages. A century before Leif Ericsson's time, Vikings had sailed from Norway through Gibraltar and all the way to the eastern Mediterranean and north Africa. The distance from Newfoundland to New York is only one fifth of the distance the Vikings had sailed in Europe. They had crossed the Atlantic Ocean and had settled at Iceland and Greenland before crossing the much shorter distance over to the American continent.[130] And the distance from Greenland to Chesapeake Bay is the same as from Bergen in Norway to Gibraltar.[131] Having reached Newfoundland, there would have been increasing social pressure on Viking chiefs and captains to probe further south to discover new lands, and there is no good reason to believe that they stopped at Newfoundland.
